SPEECH & VOICE THERAPY


Speech Disorder
This term refers to a person who has problems creating or forming speech sounds clearly and intelligibly. Adults may experience speech difficulties due to normal aging and neurogenic disease that may include:
  • ​Parkinson's
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Bell's Palsy
  • Oral cancer​​
Diagnosing speech disorders includes a comprehensive evaluation of the individual's oral motor and respiratory skills for speech. This will determine the type and severity of dysarthria (difficulty producing sounds clearly and intelligibly due to oral weakness).

Voice Disorder
Voice disorders are caused by problems when air passes from the lungs , through the vocal cords, and through the nose, mouth, and lips. Problems include:
  • ​Cancer of the throat
  • Conditions that damage the nerves that supply the muscles of the vocal cords
  • Noncancerous growths (polyps, nodules, cysts, granulomas, or ulcers) on the vocal cords.
  • Overuse of the vocal cords from screaming, constantly clearing the throat or singing
  • Acid reflux
  • Chronic food and seasonal allergies
