Speech Disorder
This term refers to a person who has problems creating or forming speech sounds clearly and intelligibly. Adults may experience speech difficulties due to normal aging and neurogenic disease that may include:
- Parkinson's
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Stroke
- Bell's Palsy
- Oral cancer
Voice Disorder
Voice disorders are caused by problems when air passes from the lungs , through the vocal cords, and through the nose, mouth, and lips. Problems include:
- Cancer of the throat
- Conditions that damage the nerves that supply the muscles of the vocal cords
- Noncancerous growths (polyps, nodules, cysts, granulomas, or ulcers) on the vocal cords.
- Overuse of the vocal cords from screaming, constantly clearing the throat or singing
- Acid reflux
- Chronic food and seasonal allergies
